Cheers
As a British guy one likes to use the word ‘cheers’. This word is a substitute/colloquial/slang for ‘thank you’. It can be used as a replacement for many situations involving the need to thank somebody.
Dan: ‘Marlboro lights please’
Shop keeper: ‘Lights ah’ (hands over cigarettes)
Dan: ‘Cheers’
I have also been known to say this in Aikido. When bowing to other students to thank them, I will say ‘cheers’. A cringing mix of traditional Japanese and English one would say.
In Singapore ‘Cheers’ is meant for toasts (same in UK) and is the name of a convenience shop!!!
Talk about harmonising language differences!!!!
